from Homeboy to Snowdude.. YES YOU CAN !

I just loved this Lil short trailer for an upcoming movie about a Black Snowboarder from Bed-Stuy.  I found it on Minority Model today.  I rarely stop by their site, but lately she’s had a few really interesting articles.  anyway about the trailer - the kids who are doing the back flips in Brooklyn are doing what kids everywhere do, if they are taught they can do it.

as kids grow we teach them our “You Can’ts” . this stops their “I Can’s“.

We as adults and leaders of youth need to find time to encourage them to say “Yes I Can” each-time they are embarking on a new and exciting learning / growth experience.

we had them when we were children. I remember falling off the side of the pool before I could swim, and my dad rushed to grab me to keep me from drowning. I almost think that if he had waited just a bit longer, it could have been the initiative to learn how to hold my breath under water, and learn that if you hold your breath, you will float.

this is something that I of course learned later when I learned how to swim in high-school, instead of in elementary, as I should have.  I surmise that this was simply because one of my parents like the parents of most non swimmers; are afraid of water.

now I know you’re saying to yourself how does this relate to that dude on the snow board - well if his parents had told him he couldn’t snow board, do you think he would have ended up being a Biggie Smalls Loving, Dread-locked Snowboarder living in Bed Stuy ?  I think not.

so todays’ moral is this boys and girls, Take a Chance - and grow. the least you’ll do is experience something that you hadn’t before; and at the end of the day - that’s what you wanted to do anyway, GROW.
